About to fully turn the page on the 2024 elections, the general secretary of the Vamos party, Cesia Rivas, takes stock of everything experienced by what many now consider the main opposition party in El Salvador. Rivas assures that the party has growth plans, backed by the fact that during their tours of the territories, there were places where people asked for the party’s presence.
How does the party rate the overall results of the election?
For us it is satisfactory. Although we did not win mayoralties and it is only one deputy seat, it is a great achievement to go from having two council members to now having four.
What does it mean for you to have maintained the seat of Deputy Claudia Ortiz?
We used to say, “if we achieve that seat, we should feel victorious”; and that is what we feel. Despite a systematic digital attack against Deputy Claudia Ortiz for two years – two years of editing her videos of the phrase “release them, already”, two years of paying YouTubers and influencers and carrying out an attack where she cannot even say good morning without being harassed by trolls – nearly 70,000 Salvadorans in the department of San Salvador alone voted for this political party. It was funny to see in the scrutiny 15 faces marked with Nuevas Ideas and one of Claudia Ortiz.
What do you think of those votes in which the same person marked Nuevas Ideas but also Claudia Ortiz?
The message is, “We want Claudia Ortiz to continue in the Assembly.” There are people from Nuevas Ideas who, although they know what they are doing, know that Claudia Ortiz is necessary in the Assembly.
But what will Vamos do to not depend on Claudia Ortiz’s image?
Unlike the leader of the ruling party, who has not allowed anyone else to shine or trained others, Claudia is doing it. We see people like Wendy Alfaro, Xiomara Lazo, Juan Carlos Villalta. We see other people who are coming to light, being recognized, and many more will come because that is the idea.
Now, what will you do to grow in other departments?
We do want to grow. There is a big difference between the Vamos of 2021 and the Vamos as of now. The party has always been open to supporting causes, sectors, and citizen needs, and we will continue to do so. We do not want to make mistakes of the past where it was only active during the electoral period.
How do you plan to get territorial support outside of San Salvador?
We have people writing to us from La Union, Morazan, Chalatenango, Ahuachapan, asking “when will Vamos be here?” We want to reach those places.
How will you reach them?
It has to be even stronger. But, for example, in Morazan, we admire how our mayor, Diego Coca, and his team, despite not having FODES, and all this structure, and not existing as municipalities, were able to move the mayor’s office forward, even paying off debts. Of course, when the municipal restructuring comes, they are the first to say “no more” because if they couldn’t find what to do with the municipality, and they (government) with that behavior, what are we going to do with larger municipalities?
But how will you get similar representatives in the other departments?
To give you an example: there were five departments (where Vamos competed for deputies): Santa Ana, La Paz, San Vicente, San Salvador, and La Libertad. In all departments, without exception, we grew. We grew in our voting. To reach the territory, we want to take root. We want to grow but for real, a growth where people feel identified.
How will you ensure the right people join the party; other parties have always been questioned for accepting without filtering profiles, and that’s why later, candidates appeared with even judicial accusations…
In any growth stage, or in a process like the one we have now, with a lot of political capital from affected parties wanting to find a place, there is no doubt that everything can slip through. But it is the responsibility of the party to allow how long this person will be there and how long they will undermine the place. We are preparing.
How?
A lot of people may come, but the party must be ready to say: “sorry, but you cannot.” That’s why there are filters, the issue of training, so that people can identify with the principles of the party and not just understand that they are here for a moment.
What happened with candidate Gabriela Guzman, who openly criticized the party after the election?
With that issue, we were very tolerant of some attitudes. She has very positive qualities. We had complaints from other candidates about her, but we decided to wait because what was done did not merit more. We were expecting her to do something: yes, because she had already shown signs that her aspirations were very personal. We cannot dismiss her achievements, they are there, but sometimes humility is lacking.
But then, how will you work to avoid another case like that?
That is where training comes in because although Gabriela attended some training sessions, she joined the party just before the primaries. Just before closing. We were dealing with the issue of lists, the gender quota. Perhaps we should have been alerted that she came from being in Nuestro Tiempo, which is not contrary, but in many issues, we are opposite poles. One then says that was the first filter, but those alerts and that experience is what this election left us.
What do you expect from the other opposition parties, only with the company of ARENA in the Assembly?
One thing is what is said, and another is what is done`. Claudia Ortiz has been consistent, being the one who speaks and receives attacks. How easy it is to say “I stand in line for the photo.” That cannot be called opposition. It’s nice to say that we are the voice of the people, but they don’t even speak in the plenary. At the end, it will simply be confirmation of what people say: that the voice of the opposition is Claudia Ortiz.

A punto de pasar la página por completo de las elecciones 2024, la secretaria general del partido Vamos, Cesia Rivas, hace balance de todo lo vivido en el mismo por el que muchos consideran, ahora, el principal partido de oposición en El Salvador. Rivas asegura que el partido tiene planes de crecimiento, amparada en que durante los recorridos en territorio hubo lugares donde la gente pedía presencia territorial del partido.
¿Cómo valora el partido los resultados generales de la elección?
Para nosotros es satisfactorio. Si bien no ganamos alcaldías, y es solo una diputación, pero es un gran logro el pasar de tener dos concejales, ahora tendremos cuatro.
¿Qué representa para ustedes haber mantenido el curul de la diputada Claudia Ortiz?
Nosotros decíamos “si se logra ese escaño, nos debemos sentir victoriosos”; y eso es lo que sentimos. A pesar de un ataque sistematizado digital en contra de la diputada Claudia Ortiz por dos años -dos años de haber editado sus vídeos de la frase “liberenlos, ya”, dos años de pagar a youtubers y a influencers y hacer todo un un ataque que no puede decir ni buenos días porque ya le caen toda la bandada de troles-; a pesar de eso casi 70,000 salvadoreños solo en el departamento de San Salvador votaron por este partido político. Era gracioso ver en el escrutinio 15 rostros marcados de Nuevas Ideas y uno de Claudia Ortiz.
¿Qué piensan de esos votos en los que una misma persona marcaba Nuevas Ideas pero también a Claudia Ortiz?
El mensaje es: “Queremos que Claudia Ortiz siga en la Asamblea”. Hay gente de Nuevas Ideas que, a pesar que saben lo que están haciendo, saben que Claudia Ortiz es necesaria en la Asamblea.
¿Pero qué hará Vamos para no depender de la imagen de Claudia Ortiz?
A diferencia del líder del oficialismo, que no ha dejado que nadie más brille ni ha formado a otros, Claudia lo está haciendo. Ahí vemos personas como Wendy Alfaro, Xiomara Lazo, Juan Carlos Villalta. Vemos otras personas que están saliendo a la luz, siendo reconocidas y muchas más que vendrán, porque esa es la idea.
Ahora bien, ¿qué van a hacer para crecer en otros departamentos?
Nosotros sí queremos crecer. Hay una gran diferencia entre el Vamos del 2021 al Vamos de ahora. El partido siempre ha tenido esa apertura para apoyar causas, sectores , necesidades ciudadanas, y eso lo vamos a seguir haciendo. No queremos cometer errores del pasado donde solo se activaba en tema electoral.
¿Cómo piensan conseguir apoyo territorial fuera de San Salvador?
Tenemos gente que nos escribe de La Unión, de Morazán, Chalatenango, Ahuachapán, y nos dice “y Vamos cuando cuándo va a haber aquí”. Queremos alcanzar esos lugares.
¿Cómo los van a alcanzar?
Tiene que ser más fuerte aún. Pero, por ejemplo, en Morazán, admiramos como nuestro alcalde, Diego Coca y su equipo, a pesar de no tener FODES, de toda esta estructura y que no existen como municipios, pudieron sacar adelante la alcaldía, hasta pagar deudas. Claro, cuando se viene la reestructura municipal, son los primeros en decirme “ya no” porque si no hallaban qué hacer con el municipio,y ellos (gobierno) con ese comportimiento, qué vamos a hacer con municipios más grandes.
¿Pero cómo conseguirán tener referentes así en los demás departamentos?
Para mencionarle: fueron cinco departamentos (donde compitió Vamos en busca de diputados). Fue Santa Ana, La Paz, San Vicente, San Salvador y La Libertad. En todos los departamentos, sin excepción, crecimos. Nosotros crecimos a nivel de nuestra votación. Para llegar a territorio, queremos echar raíces. Queremos crecer pero de verdad, un crecimiento donde la gente se siente identificada.
Cómo cuidarán el ingreso al partido; otros partidos siempre fueron cuestionados de aceptar sin filtrar perfiles, y por eso luego aparecían candidatos con señalamientos hasta judiciales…
En toda etapa de crecimiento, o en un proceso como el de ahorita, con mucho capital político de partidos afectados que quiere llegar a un lugar, sin duda se nos puede colar de todo. Pero ahí está la responsabilidad del partido de permitir cuánto tiempo estará esta persona y cuánto tiempo va a minar el lugar. Nos estamos preparando.
¿Cómo?
Puede venir mucha gente, pero el partido debe estar presto a decir: “lo sentimos, pero usted no puede”. Para eso hay filtros, el tema de formación, que la gente pueda identificarse con los principios del partido, y no entender que solo viene para un momento.
¿Qué fue lo que pasó con la candidata Gabriela Guzmán, que tras la elección, cuestionó abiertamente al partido?
Con ese tema, fuimos muy tolerantes con algunas actitudes. Ella tiene cualidades muy positivas. Tuvimos quejas de otros candidatos hacia ella, pero decidimos esperar porque lo hecho no ameritaba más. Esperábamos que fuera a hacer algo: sí, porque ya había dado luces de mostrar que sus aspiraciones eran muy personales. No podemos desmeritar sus marcas, ahí están, pero a veces falta humildad.
¿Pero entonces, cómo trabajarán para evitar otro caso así?
Ahí es donde entra la formación, porque si bien Gabriela estuvo en unas capacitaciones, ella entra al partido justo antes de las internas. Justo antes de cerrar. Estábamos con el tema de planillas, de la cuota de género. Quizá nos debió alertar que venía de estar en Nuestro Tiempo, que no es contrario pero en muchos temas somos polos opuestos. Uno después dice que ahí era el primer filtro, pero esas alertas y esa experiencia nos deja esta elección.
¿Qué esperan de los demás partidos de oposición, solo con la compañía de ARENA en la Asamblea?
Una cosa es lo que se dice y otra lo que se hace. Claudia Ortiz ha sido coherente, siendo la que habla y recibe ataques. Que fácil es decir “me pongo a la par para la foto”. Eso no se le puede llamar oposición. Qué bonito decir que somos la voz del pueblo y ni hablan en el pleno. Al final, simplemente será la confirmación de lo que dice la gente: que la voz de la oposición es Claudia Ortiz.
