The Archbishop of San Salvador, Monsignor José Luis Escobar Alas, confirmed this Sunday that almost a month after delivering 150,000 signatures to the Legislative Assembly (Asamblea Legislativa) requesting the repeal of the General Law on Metallic Mining, they have still not received a response.
“We haven’t received a response, but we hope it leads to the law being repealed and the mining project not being carried out, God willing,” Escobar Alas told LA PRENSA GRÁFICA at the conclusion of the Palm Sunday mass celebration at the Metropolitan Cathedral.
However, despite the silence from the Assembly, the clergyman remains optimistic and hopes that the authorities will reconsider the decision to approve said law.
“We haven’t received any response, but we haven’t received a negative response either, so we are very hopeful that the president (Nayib Bukele) and the lawmakers will reconsider the issue,” he expressed.
The collection of these signatures began in February 2025 and were delivered last March 18 by the archbishop in person to the Legislative Assembly.
Previously, the clergyman had expressed that the initiative is for “the good of the people,” as if mining extraction is carried out in El Salvador, “it will affect us all.” Whereas the repeal of the law “is for the good of the water we all consume, for preventing air and land contamination, [and] for the health of people and also animals.”
Iglesia católica aún sin respuesta a petición para derogación de ley de minería
El arzobispo de San Salvador, monseñor José Luis Escobar Alas, confirmó este domingo que a casi un mes de haber entregado a la Asamblea Legislativa 150,000 firmas para solicitar la derogación de la Ley General de Minería Metálica, aún no han logrado una respuesta.
“No hemos obtenido respuesta, pero esperamos que sirva para que se derogue la ley y para que no se lleve a cabo el proyecto minero, primero Dios”, dijo Escobar Alas a LA PRENSA GRÁFICA, al concluir la celebración de la misa del Domingo de Ramos en la Catedral Metropolitana.
Sin embargo, a pesar del silencio de la Asamblea, el religioso se mantiene optimista y espera que las autoridades se replanteen la decisión de aprobar dicha ley.
“No hemos recibido ninguna respuesta, pero tampoco hemos recibido una respuesta negativa, entonces tenemos mucha esperanza de que el señor presidente (Nayib Bukele) y los señores diputados reconsideren el tema” expresó.
La recolección de dichas firmas inició en febrero de este 2025 y fueron entregadas el pasado 18 de marzo por el arzobispo en persona a la Asamblea Legislativa.
Anteriormente, el religioso había expresado que la iniciativa es por “el bien del pueblo”, pues si se lleva a cabo la extracción minera en El Salvador “nos va a afectar a todos”. Mientras que la derogación de la ley “es en bien del agua que todos consumimos, de la no contaminación del aire y de la tierra, es el bien de la salud de las personas y también de los animales”.
