At this point, continuing to twist ourselves into legalistic contortions is to play the game of Trumpism and Bukelism—to pretend there is a debate when what exists on one side is demagogy and lies, and on the other side, evidence. The information is there for anyone who wants to see it, for anyone who analyzes with reason rather than emotion: Salvadoran migrant Kilmar Armando Ábrego García should not be locked up in Nayib Bukele’s Salvadoran mega‑prison. There is no evidence that he belongs to the Mara Salvatrucha‑13 (MS‑13) or that he is a terrorist. He has not been convicted in either the United States or El Salvador. U.S. administrative records show he was a migrant and a worker who fled his country and was put on a flight to a Salvadoran prison for no reason, only to be denounced as a terrorist—in English and Spanish—by two presidents and their servile mouthpieces.

Labeling Ábrego’s more than month‑long incarceration in a facility marketed worldwide as a dungeon for continental terrorists is not difficult: it is illegal, it is kidnapping, it is cruel. Someone must be held accountable—today, later, at some point, whenever possible.

Solving what Trumpism frames as a complex technical dilemma—the return of Ábrego ordered by a U.S. judge—isn’t hard either. Let’s not fool ourselves: if this morning Trump demanded that Bukele hand Ábrego over, the Salvadoran would be on a plane to the United States this afternoon. On the matter of receiving prisoners, Bukele has shown he is at Donald Trump’s absolute service. We’ve worsened the old cliché: we’re no longer the United States’ backyard; we’re its jail.

The international debate, as so often when the surname Trump is involved, remains largely confined to U.S. concerns: whether Trump can send him back, whether a judge can force Trump’s hand, whether U.S. citizens should worry that something similar might happen to them.

Yet in the midst of all this there is a message as stark as the illegality of Ábrego’s imprisonment—a message coming straight from El Salvador’s Casa Presidencial (Presidential House) and directed at the millions of Salvadoran migrants in the United States: President Bukele is willing to trade you as bargaining chips. You, who reached that country without anyone’s permission to improve your lives and those of your families, will be branded terrorists by Bukele whenever Trump asks. And you will be treated as such.

Roughly two million Salvadorans live in the United States, according to various studies, and nearly half are still undocumented—that is, half, like the now‑imprisoned Ábrego, entered or stayed in the country without permission.

In 2024, when Bukele was re‑elected in violation of four articles of the Constitution, about 200,000 of those migrants voted for him at polling sites set up in the United States. Bukele swept that electorate, winning more than 95 % of the vote. To cast a ballot, migrants needed only their Salvadoran Documento Único de Identidad—no U.S. papers were required. Migrants chose him. The undocumented chose him. If the now‑imprisoned Ábrego voted in that election, statistics say he almost certainly voted for Bukele.

Sometimes it seems unnecessary to hammer a point home, but given the passion surrounding this issue, it’s worth doing: if you are a migrant in the United States—papers or no papers; if you are an asylum seeker there, with no criminal record in either country—President Bukele, whom you have likely defended, voted for, and applauded, is ready to call you a terrorist and lock you up in his mega‑prison if Trump asks. Bukele a migrantes: serán traicionados cuando lo necesite

A estas alturas, continuar retorciéndonos en leguleyadas es jugar el juego del trumpismo y el bukelismo, aparentar que hay debate cuando lo que hay de ese lado es demagogia y mentira, y lo que hay del otro lado es evidencia. La información está disponible para quien quiera enterarse, para quien analice con la razón y no con el sentimiento: el migrante salvadoreño Kilmar Armando Ábrego García no debería estar preso en la megacárcel salvadoreña de Nayib Bukele. No hay pruebas de que sea miembro de la Mara Salvatrucha-13 ni tampoco terrorista. No ha sido condenado ni en Estados Unidos ni en El Salvador. Hay evidencia en procesos administrativos estadounidenses de que era un migrante y un trabajador, que huyó de su país y que fue enviado en un vuelo a una cárcel salvadoreña sin razón alguna, y que fue insultado como terrorista, en inglés y español, por dos presidentes y sus serviles voceros. 

Etiquetar el encarcelamiento de más de un mes de Ábrego en una cárcel que se vende al mundo como una mazmorra para terroristas continentales tampoco es tan difícil: es ilegal, es un secuestro, es cruel. Debe castigarse a alguien por ello. Hoy. Después. En algún momento. Cuando se pueda.

Resolver aquello que el trumpismo vende como un complejo dilema técnico -el retorno de Ábrego ordenado por un juez estadounidense- tampoco es difícil. No nos engañemos: si esta mañana Trump exige a Bukele que le devuelva a Ábrego, el salvadoreño estaría en un vuelo hacia Estados Unidos esta tarde. Bukele, en este tema de recibir presos, ha dejado claro que está al servicio absoluto de Trump. Hemos empeorado el lugar común: ya no somos el traspatio de Estados Unidos, somos su cárcel.

El debate internacional, como suele ocurrir cuando el apellido Trump está en el medio, continúa esencialmente circunscrito al acontecer estadounidense. Que si Trump puede devolverlo, que si un juez puede obligar a Trump, que si los ciudadanos de aquel país deberían preocuparse de que les ocurra algo similar. 

Pero en medio de todo esto hay un mensaje tan contundente como la ilegalidad del encarcelamiento de Ábrego, un mensaje que sale de la mismísima Casa Presidencial de El Salvador, y es para los millones de salvadoreños migrantes en Estados Unidos: el presidente Bukele está dispuesto a venderlos como moneda de cambio. A ustedes, los que llegaron a ese país sin permiso de nadie para mejorar sus vidas y las de sus familias, Bukele los convertirá en terroristas cuando Trump se lo pida. Y los tratará como tal. 

La diáspora salvadoreña en Estados Unidos es de alrededor de dos millones de personas, según diferentes estudios, y se calcula que casi mitad aún está indocumentada. Es decir, que la mitad, al igual que el ahora recluso Ábrego, entró o se quedó en el país sin permiso de nadie. 

En 2024, cuando Bukele fue reelecto violando cuatro artículos de la Constitución, alrededor de 200.000 de esos migrantes votaron por él desde algún punto habilitado en Estados Unidos. Bukele arrasó entre esa población, con más del 95% de los votos. Para votar, solo se requería el Documento Único de Identidad salvadoreño y ningún papel estadounidense. Los migrantes lo eligieron. Los indocumentados lo eligieron. Si el ahora recluso Ábrego votó en esas elecciones, es casi seguro estadísticamente que haya votado por Bukele.

A veces, da la impresión de que rematar cierta información es un acto innecesario, pero en esta ocasión, y sumergidos en un tema tan pasional, vale la pena hacerlo: si usted es migrante en Estados Unidos -tenga papeles o no-, si usted es solicitante de asilo en Estados Unidos, sin importar que no tenga ni una condena por ningún delito ni allá ni en su país, el presidente Bukele, al que probablemente usted ha defendido, votado y aplaudido, está dispuesto a llamarle terrorista y recibirlo en su megacárcel si Trump se lo pide. Si aún no lo cree, deje de lado sus pasiones, busque la evidencia y lea sobre el caso del migrante Kilmar Armando Ábrego García.
