This evening, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen confirmed on social media that he met with Kilmar Abrego García, a Maryland resident “mistakenly sent” to the Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (Terrorism Confinement Center, CECOT) in El Salvador.
In a post on X, Van Hollen wrote: “I said my top priority for this trip was to meet with Kilmar. Tonight I had that opportunity. I have called his wife, Jennifer, to pass along his message of love. I look forward to providing a full update upon my return.”
The statement followed Van Hollen’s April 16 trip to El Salvador, where he sought to verify Abrego García’s condition after he was deported in March 2025 despite a U.S. court order protecting him.
Van Hollen initially said the Salvadoran government, through Vice President Félix Ulloa, had denied him access to the detainee. His later tweet, however, indicates the meeting took place.
After Van Hollen’s confirmation, President Nayib Bukele responded in another tweet: “Now that it has been confirmed that he is healthy, he has the honor of remaining under El Salvador’s custody.” The remark suggests the Salvadoran government still has no plans to release Abrego García or facilitate his return to the United States, and intends to keep him at CECOT.
Abrego García was sent to CECOT on U.S.-organized flights deporting alleged gang members. The U.S. Supreme Court ordered that he be allowed to return, but the ruling has yet to be carried out.

En un tuit, Van Hollen escribió: “Dije que mi objetivo principal de este viaje era reunirme con Kilmar. Esta noche tuve esa oportunidad. He llamado a su esposa, Jennifer, para transmitirle su mensaje de amor. Espero dar una actualización completa al regresar”.
La declaración siguió a su viaje a El Salvador el 16 de abril, donde buscó verificar el estado de Abrego García, deportado en marzo de 2025 pese a una orden judicial de EE.UU. que lo protegía.
Inicialmente, Van Hollen informó que el gobierno salvadoreño, a través del vicepresidente Félix Ulloa, le negó el acceso al detenido. Sin embargo, su tuit posterior indica que logró el encuentro.
Tras la confirmación de Van Hollen, Bukele reaccionó en otro tuit: “Ahora que se ha confirmado que está sano, tiene el honor de permanecer bajo la custodia de El Salvador”. La declaración sugiere que, a pesar de la reunión, el gobierno salvadoreño no planea liberar a Abrego García ni facilitar su regreso a EE.UU., manteniendo su postura de retenerlo en CECOT.
Abrego García fue enviado a CECOT en vuelos organizados por EE.UU. para deportar a presuntos miembros de pandillas. La Corte Suprema de EE.UU. ordenó facilitar su regreso, pero la medida no se ha cumplido.
